IWF: Turkmenistan achieves considerable progress in economic reforms

During these days the delegation of the International Monetary Fund held a series of the meetings with the Government of Turkmenistan.

Upon concluding the visit Head of the IMF mission to Turkmenistan Peter Wingley made a press statement on the results of the meetings and talks held in Turkmenistan

Mr. Peter Wingley said that the IMF specialists came to conclusion in whole that the Government of Turkmenistan had achieved considerable progress in implementing the economic reforms (particularly in unification of the exchange rates) that had been facilities by the currency reforms, tariff reduction and price adjustment. The IMF experts noted that the circumspect financial policy carried out by the Government and diversification of the gas export markets had allowed Turkmenistan to avoid the negative influence of the ongoing financial crisis worldwide. The adoption of the 2009 State Budget and establishment of the Stabilization Fund as well as other reforms of the national taxation and financial system were the important steps towards bettering the methods of tax and budget management to further enhance the financial foundation of the country.

The IMF mission positively evaluated the thorough preparations for denomination of the national currency unit including the measures aimed at developing the banking system and expressed the willingness to maintain close co-operation with Turkmenistan in these fields, the Head of the IMF Mission noted in conclusion.
