Number of MTS subscribers in Turkmenistan exceeds 600 thousand people

The subscriber base of Mobile TeleSystems open joint-stock company in Turkmenistan has exceeded 600 thousand people, the company said in a press release. The number of subscribers in May was 500 thousand people.

The subscriber growth was due to a significant expansion of the coverage zone throughout Turkmenistan and increase in services offered by the company, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat.

In the first half of 2008, the coverage zone in Akhal region was extended to Babadayhan and Agalang settlements, in Dashoguz region to Orman, Ylyaly, Yemaltakan, Temech, Hellen and Alili settlements. Earlier, Rukhubelent district has joined the network.

In summer, MTS launched a high speed internet access via GPRS technology and MMS service. Other than this, MTS opened a new sales and service office as well as payments office in the coastal city of Turkmenbahsi in early July.

It should be recalled that in May MTS President Leonid Melamed announced the company's ambition to increase the number of subscribers in Turkmenistan to 1 million people.

MTS's share of the Turkmen mobile communication market exceeds 85%.
