Politics : President to report on situation in Turkmenistan at Council of Elders

The Council of Elders of Turkmenistan is a consultative assembly of elders to help the authorities in addressing issues of state importance. In total, the Council of Elders consists of 600 people - 100 from each province and the city of Ashgabat. Candidates aged over 60 with time record of at least 25 years are invited to participate in every session of the council. They are citizens of Turkmenistan enjoying prestige and respect.

The Council of Elders functions on a voluntary basis in the form of meetings that make decisions of consultative nature by a simple majority vote and open ballot. The President of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen Parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan and the National Movement Galkynysh are entitled to propose issues for consideration by the Council of Elders shall.
