Unique architectural monument reproduced on carpet On the eve of the 17th anniversary of independence of Turkmenistan the carpet-makers of the Turkmen Carpet Museum woven the carpet depicting the Seiyt Jemaleddin Mosque in Anau. The carpet that embodied the unique pieces of ancient architecture and the centuries-old traditions of Turkmen carpet weaving that has entered the golden age in modern Turkmenistan is exhibited at the Museum
The Seiyt Jemaleddin Mosque, a unique XV century monument was destroyed by the terrible earthquake in 1948. Once the portal of the mosque built on the border of the medieval citadel was decorated with the mosaic panel depicting dragons. During the years of independence the Turkmen archaeologists reconstructed the fragments of coloured tiles once forming the mosaic panel discovered under the ruins of the destroyed building. The unique archaeological finds are displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan.
The museum specialists studied the scientific books, the publications of archaeologists M.E. Masson and G.A. Pugachenkova, who had conducted the research into the monument. An artistic reconstruction of the Seiyt Jemaleddin Mosque was the result of collaboration with the scientists of the Miras National Cultural Centre, the State Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Turkmenistan, Central Asia and the East under President of Turkmenistan and the National Department on Preservation, Study and Restoration of the Cultural and Historical Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and TV and Radio Broadcasting of Turkmenistan. The design of the carpet was drafted by is A. Durdyev and M. Berdyeva who recreated the ancient carpet patterns and natural landscape around the mosque in XV century. Carpet-makers K. Charyeva, E. Babaeva and A. Durdyeva embodied the idea. The threads of 116 tints reproduce the beauty of the Seiyt Jemaleddin Mosque and the garden on the carpet canvas (230 x 210 cm). The density is 450,000 knots per square meter.
This carpet is the second one in the series of the carpets Historical Monuments of Turkmenistan. The carpet is nominated for presentation at the contest initiated by the President of Turkmenistan. The carpet-makers of the Museum are working on two carpets depicting Ancient Dehistan and Astana-baba – the most famous monument of Lebap. The preliminary research work to recreate the look of the architectural complex Khoja Yusup Hamadani in Ancient Merv is nearing completion.
